David is a popular teacher and his workshops in impressionism are available throughout the year at posted times and places. David's oil painting workshops cover the major concepts and processes encountered in creating art and using the oil painting medium.

Three-day painting workshops in landscapes (all opaque media)

Jan 15, 16 & 17, 2010 (Friday to Sunday) from 10am to 5pm with a 1 hour lunch break. Cost is $6 per hour limited to 6 students. (Enrollment filled)

2009 Workshops

Two-day and three-day workshops will be held at LaRoche Fine Art Gallery in Sidney, Victoria Island, Canada.

April 18-19, 2009, 9am to 4pm with lunch break. Fee is $180 Canadian plus tax.

April 21-23, 2009, 9am to 4pm with lunch break. Fee is $275 Canadian plus tax.

2008 Workshops

Five-day Painting Workshop in Lake Tahoe

October 14-18, 2008, 9am to 4pm with lunch break at the Lakeside Gallery, Kings Beach, North Lake Tahoe.

Class is limited to 10 students, fee is $450. Media: oils, acrylics and pastels; demonstrations in oils.

Theme: How to unify a painting to give it impact and a strong mood: Use of 3 color systems separately, using grey as a "binder"; applying complimentary colors for over-all color enhancement; invoking the "golden section" proportion for a balance between implied movement and stability; caligraphic elements as part of design; using the brush stroke expressively; etc.

Format of studio painting classes:

Studio painting classes in opaque media are available Mondays and Wednesdays for 3 hours either 9am-12 noon or 10am-1pm. The emphasis will be on landscapes using oils. Watercolor classes will be available within several months and will be posted on this website.

The following are formats of different workshops given by the artist:

The Mini Workshop Series

Given in Chico, CA only, once a week (2-3 hours each), focusing on one specific concept each week. Usually 4-8 weeks in succession. Participants can register for the entire series or attend selected classes. Find out more about topics covered.

The 5-Day Workshop

Four teacher demonstrations are given in this workshop, each step and concept is explained at the moment it is executed. Concepts and processes are engaged in a step-wise manner, showing how to build a painting. Each session also provides students with informal question-and-answer opportunities.

After demonstrations, each student is assigned a different landscape several times throughout the workshop and is taken through the steps with individual attention from the teacher in a relaxed, supportive manner. Lecture/demonstrations are followed up with printed material as reinforcement. Informal group critique takes place during the final afternoon.

Maximum of 15 students at all levels of skills. Find out more about topics covered,schedule and materials.

The Weekend Workshop

This is a 5 or 6-hour workshop on Saturday and Sunday,10am-12.30pm and 2.00pm-5.30pm each day. It employs the same principles and procedures as the Five-Day Workshop, but with one painting assignment and several lecture/demonstrations.

The Evening Mini Workshop Series

Given in Chico, CA only. One evening per week (2-3 hours each), focusing on one specific concept per evening. Usually 4-8 weeks in succession. Participants can register for the entire series or attend selected classes. Find out more about topics covered.
